How to Plan a Ministry Fair

By Kurt and Josh

Not too long ago we did a ministry fair for our students—we had tables that featured each of the ministries in our church that were open to students. After a short talk on serving, we dismissed early for them to snake through the room and sign up for different opportunities to serve inside and outside the church.

Pick a date that makes sense.

Take some time to really consider when is the best time to create an “on ramp” for ministries in your church. We’ve found that near the beginning of the school year, New Year, or right after students move up into youth group are all strategic times for getting students involved.

Partner with the whole church.

One of the most popular ministry opportunities at our ministry fair was to start serving in our children’s ministry. What better way to bless a church than to spread your students around to serve it! Ask every department or leader if they could use help—then invite them to set up a table!

Make sure all ministries have a leader.

The last thing you want to do is have students sign up for a service opportunity that is wandering without a leader. Before you “green light” a ministry to have a table, make sure you connect with the leader and stack hands on their vision for the coming season of ministry.

Plan an immediate meeting/follow-up.

In our experience, the highest success rate comes when a group gathers together right away. If possible have a follow-up / interest meeting planned for no longer than 7 days after the ministry fair. It will help rally everyone and cement their position in the new ministry.

Any other wisdom to share with others who might be planning to do a ministry fair?
