Busting the 'But I'm Not Creative' Myth

A quick look at the world around us reveals the incredible creativity that God possesses. And he’s passed that gift on to us! But just like everything else, no two people have the exact same creative qualities, so the possibilities are excitingly endless. Expressing our creative side gets us in touch with a special part of who we are and allows us to reflect God. Here's a film clip and some discussion questions your creative teenagers will enjoy, and they’ll help your less creative teenagers learn to express themselves better.

Amadeus (PG)

This movie clip portrays Mozart rewriting a piece of music for a small and amazed audience.

Time: 10 to 15 minutes

Scripture: Genesis 1:1-31

Clip Location: Approximately 0:34:30 through 0:46:30 when the VCR counter is set at 0:00:00 as the studio logo appears at the beginning of the film. Be sure to preview this clip!

Synopsis: Mozart has come to Vienna to perform his music for a royal audience. The Emperor's court composer, Salieri, composed a small piano piece for Mozart's visits. Later, Mozart decides to "improve" Salieri's piece. The scene begins when the king tries to hand the music to Mozart. Stop the clip when the scene ends.

Illustration: God is the Creator of all things. Since we are made in his image, we also have a desire to create. This creativity can be used for good and for bad. This movie clip is an example of talent that is used to gloat and show off to others. The following questions will explore how we can use the abilities God has given us to love him more and give him glory.

• What do you think of this statement: God is an Artist?
• The Bible tells that God created the universe, but do you think of him as artistic? Why or why not?
