CPYU Trend Alert: Salvia: A New and Dangerous Drug
by Walt Mueller
“Does work or school have you down? Do you need a mini mental getaway from the realities of everyday life? The Mind Bender will jumpstart your senses with three distinct psychedelic trips.” You might be surprised to learn that I didn’t find those words posted in the window of an Amsterdam head shop where drugs are peddled, celebrated, and used legally right out in the open. No, I read them on my office computer screen as I was researching a new drug making its dangerous way through the consciousness of today’s youth culture. The invitation to a drug-induced temporary escape appeared on one of the many internet sites touting and selling Salvia Divinorum, what many are saying just might be the next marijuana. . . only much more powerful. In this case, the site guaranteed “high quality,” “discount prices,” “great customer service,” and “outstanding potency levels.”1
That site - and dozens of others like it that I discovered while conducting an Internet search for “Salvia Divinorum” - is easily accessible to the very same generation of kids who concerned parents have been encouraging to “just say no” to drugs for years. Sadly, one of the sites I encountered offers a distorted twist on that anti-drug slogan with its site name: “Just say once to Salvia.”2 Imagine being a vulnerable and easily-swayed young teen who encounters this invitation on the site: “If you never try it, you’ll always wonder. . . . what if? . . . . Salvia is capable of changing you, your family and friends and the world around you.”
It’s no secret that we are raising our teens in a world that glorifies alcohol and drug abuse. The alarming statistics on teen substance abuse indicate that far too many kids are accepting the invitation, just saying “yes,” and buying the lies. For that reason, it’s important that we remain street-wise and ahead of the drug trends in order that we might equip them to say “no” to the many new drug options that continue to appear, including Salvia Divinorum. In order to fulfill a preventive role in the life of your teen, here’s what you need to know about this relatively new drug craze that’s sweeping across the country.

freedom of choice, did you
freedom of choice, did you really go there
come on it sounds more like freedom of stupidity
and if it doesn't work then why continue to "try" it, and why the need for recreational substances anyways?
also it seems like it is the new trendy drug based on these posts
As someone who is just
As someone who is just graduating from college and going into youth ministry how can I inform of the dangers and encourage them in a productive way without sounding like a parent to them?
i say drugs like salvia are
i say drugs like salvia are probably something to try unless you're really sensitive or schizophrenic or something, and in a couple of years we'll learn that it causes some sinister long term effect something or rather, and we'll all be saying "back then we didn't know" so i say enjoy the ignorance that will soon wear off with this new and cool drug
peace to you all
Youngsters have easy access
Youngsters have easy access to this drug and I know this for a fact. They can find it in local shops and it's also affordable. You are right, salvia might become the next marijuana and we don't even know that much about the plant. What do scientists say about it's impact in human body?

I have never tried salvia
I have never tried salvia but i've been researching it and it doesnt seem bad if used in a safe enviroment. Its only bad when you do an excess of it and use it as a drug instead of a legal kickback :P. But the dude who wrote that article up there.... is just fucked! He didnt even try it, he just read what other ppl said. What an ass. pce out!
The responses all sound like
The responses all sound like they are coming from stoners...
i came across this website
i came across this website trying to research
saliva. I want to make sure that it is safe before i
try it ahead of time.
I have found that yes the drug can potentially be harmfull if not handled safely. if done in a safe environment I do not understand the danger. I dont beleive anyone should be pressured as he claims that teens are. As for making it illegal I think it takes away our right.
I am all for clean natural highs.
Seems that Walt was on the
Seems that Walt was on the cutting edge of problem yet again. Just saw a Today Show program talking about this problem along with video tape of dangers, and the nubmer of states that have now made it illiegal. Thanks for the work you do.
I agree with the rest of
I agree with the rest of you. This guy is just one of those do gooders whose going to save us weather we need it or not. what's happening to our freedom of choice in this country? A few people with opinions are shouting from the mountain top how dangerous this is and how dangerous that is. tell you what,LET ME DECIDE FOR MYSELF. You know what, I have an opinion, automobiles are proven killers I say we make them illegal. that seems to be their answer for everything, our jails and prisons aren't full enough yet. It's the same thing with most recreational substances. They will illegalize it causing the price to climb to outrageous proportions increasing crime. We have some real genius people making decisions for the rest of us with common sense!
wow, scare the masses into
wow, scare the masses into banning something you don't understand, how Christian of you
A new and dangerous drug?
A new and dangerous drug? Can you tell me how it is dangerous? Have you even done any research? I have been doing some and as far as i know scientist haven't been able to find any negative side effects from it. Not even hangover. I have tried it few times. It makes you confused for few minutes and that's it.
well you speak about salvia
well you speak about salvia being a new drug but i have yet to hear any dangers of it. it only last for a bleak amount of time and there have been no cases of anything bad happening to anyone...ever
